Here it is, in case you haven’t seen Mueller deliver it in person yet. There’s really nothing here that wasn’t already in the report, but who reads reports besides geeks and nerds like me, am I right?

Nonetheless, I have a few questions. No, more than a few. A lot more than a few, and my main takeaway from this is that Mueller wants to completely avoid testifying to Congress and answering some of those questions, and while I respect and understand Mueller’s wishes not to go through that inevitable shitshow of a political circus and face the wrath of the right, there’s no way this can be allowed.

House Democrats need to insist on it. What are the odds of that happening?

Immediately after Mueller’s speech would have been a great time for a Democratic Party with some courage and spine to announce the launch of impeachment proceedings, starting today. Alas, this was not to be.

some comments i read here and there:

- I don’t know what you all heard, but I think Mueller made it clear the President committed crimes, and that anyone else would have been charged.

- trump et all will say anyway that this exonerated him. Sounded like Mueller was saying if he wasn’t president I would have nailed his ass.

- As I marinate on it, he’s calling for Impeachment. Also he neutralizes the “NO OBSTRUCTION, NO COLLUSION” line.

- I’ll take the “lays out case for impeachment” spin over “weaseled out of public responsibility” spin. Fortunately, there is no “complete exoneration” spin to be had.

- It was as clear a call for impeachment hearings as he could legally give.

From his statement:

“If we had confidence that the president had not committed a crime, we would have said so,” he said. He added, citing a DOJ policy: “Charging the president with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider.”

From the report:

“If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the President clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state,” the report read. “We are unable to reach that judgment. The evidence we obtained about the President’s actions and intent presents difficult issues that prevent us from conclusively determining that no criminal conduct occurred. Accordingly, while this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

Katy Tur summing it up on Twitter

Mueller: you have a 400+ page report that lays it out unambiguously in black and white. If Special Counsel could say confidently Trump didn’t commit a crime, they would’ve. They can’t so they didn’t. Now it’s up to Congress and the American people to decide what to do.

Also, hello! The Russians made multiple attempts to interfere in our elections and they’ll do it again! Pay attention to that.

meanwhile this is still early days
Pelosi is clearly allowing time for many of the pieces to fall into place
- she may also be waiting for a bombshell (ie financials)
- there is still time to start official impeachment hearings pretty much anytime - likely late summer / early fall. this can drag on as long as they like, sunshine being quite a disinfectant
- as the hearings progress there will be lots of opportunities for articles of impeachment to come up. Heck, they could time that for two or a month before the election.

i have no doubt that what we see the dems doing publicly, is not “what the dems are doing”. and i am surprised so many people think it is, that they are in fact laying all their strategies right on the table daily for everyone to see.

correct
- a bunch of hearings from september to may or so
- the first couple, like now where all the subpoenas came from, dont have to be ‘impeachment’ hearings
- that comes later when attention has grown, there’s some focus, and if they continue to get stonewalled

re: #31 Cheechako

I agree 100%!

i think the “impeachment now, this minute” crowd needs to breath a bit and learn to go slowly. we’re heading there. there are a lot of moving parts, a lot of differing opinions and different interests. it’s not like we won’t get there.

electoral-vote.com this AM has this piece on recent op-eds (all links at the EV site):

On this question, the commentariat’s advice is quite clear. Consider these recent op-eds:

- Why the Democrats’ long game on impeachment is working
- Impeach Trump? It would be a profound mistake for Democrats to be goaded into it
- Democrats shouldn’t focus on impeaching Trump. They need to focus on beating him in 2020.
- The (Political) Case for Impeachment Doesn’t Hold Up
- Smarts, not lack of spine, keep Pelosi from impeaching
- How do you solve a problem like Donald Trump? Impeachment isn’t the answer. Yet.
- Impeaching Trump Would Constrain Democrats Too Much
- Don’t Impeach

Although there are also these op-eds:

- Nancy Pelosi is making a big mistake on impeachment
- The Democrats Are Overthinking Trump’s Impeachment
- Impeaching Trump Is Risky. So Is Refusing To.
- Democrats need to get past impeachment jitters. It’s not 1998 and Trump is no Clinton.
- Pelosi’s Pragmatism on Impeachment May Backfire
- The case for impeaching President Trump—now
- It’s time to start impeachment hearings. Today.
- Why I’m Now for Impeachment

Ok, so maybe the commentariat’s advice isn’t so clear.

- i think for now she is letting him impeach himself slowly.
- if the worst we get is winning 2020, i’ll take it. that’ll be a hell of a repudiation
- and i think impeachment is coming anyway, it’ll be obvious to everyone by then, and then sit back and let the republicans defend it

There are many political junkies (like us), who are well aware of what has been happening with this president. They are the ones who have the foresight to see where the clown show is heading and therefore, want to start the impeachment right away.

BUT, Mr and Ms American Voter are not yet convinced that impeachment is warranted. They still have to be convinced of the seriousness of what has occurred. Hearings and court fights will continue through this summer and probably into the fall. At some point, just like what happened with Nixon, the dam will break and the loud voices will turn in to a deafening roar.

Equally likely is they have read it and know what it says but they know the people who support Trump no matter what have done the same or have not read it so they know they can bullshit their way about the reality of it all. I mean goddamn this shit makes Nixon look even keeled. Nixon definitely had no love for Truman or LBJ but he didn’t project his hate or dislike on to them when they died while he was potus. Trump is a petty loser who never gets over a slight perceived or real.

Which is why I never tire of calling him the “short-fingered vulgarian.” Sometimes it’s just best to stick with the classics.

I’m still partial to Scotland’s favorite insult, the “tangerine wankmaggot”. However, there is no shortage of epithets to fling at our not-so-beloved President.

Well you have to give credit to McCain that his thumbs-down on the health bill was a pretty major and very public fuck-you to Trump (and McConnell). We all love him for it…

What amuses me is his supporters think he’s ‘this bad ass but he’s sensitive almost to the point of absurdity. He can’t handle SNL poking fun and he now can’t be around a ship or sailors named/associated with a ship named after a critic of his. As I got at, Obama gave HW Bush the nation’s highest civilian honor. Obama’s right wing fans seemed to project their own pettiness and desire for a petty prick to be potus on to Obama.

It was a pretty noble final act for McCain. The man loved his country more than his party. Trump isn’t fit to hold McCain’s jock.

Four. I know it’s not named after his son but his son has served too. I obviously don’t agree with the McCain clan ideologically but they’re a family of public service, that’s the opposite of the Teumps.

McCain spoke many times about how his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc had all been US military, for many generations.

But when he went on Finding Your Roots, the most impressive thing Gates found was on his mother’s side… his great-great-great-forgethowmanygreats-grandpa on his mother’s side was (*drumroll*) George Washington’s training officer and CO in the French & Indian War.

re: #30 Decatur Deb

Only been on a couple Navy ships, but that sounds like a mortal insult to the crew.

That the Navy acquiesced to covering it up was an insult to the ship, its crew, and essentially the USN itself. They should have told whoever asked for that to be done to go fuck themselves.
